Partner Profile: Putting municipalities at the centre of their development
Objective: Bringing Economic Opportunities to Rural Cameroon
Some of Cuso International’s main environmental partners in Cameroon are the five municipalities that surround the Campo Ma’an and Dja Forest Reserve. Cameroon has transferred control of community development to individual municipalities, so that they become the principle actors in their own efforts to improve their livelihoods.
Our largest partner is the municipality of Akom II, a community dependent on subsistence agriculture with traditional methods, mainly the cultivation of cassava, maize, plantain, and products made from these crops. Cuso International volunteers work with the community members so that rural agricultural villages can flourish. Women and young entrepreneurs let volunteers know what support they need so they can undertake environmentally-conscious development initiatives.
